Importance of the SNS Number in Portugal
Booking Appointments:
- Primary Care: To see a general practitioner (GP) or family doctor, you need to book an appointment at your local Centro de Saúde. You can do this by visiting the health center in person, calling, or using the online appointment booking system if available.
- Specialist Consultations: If you need to see a specialist, your GP will refer you. You will then book your specialist appointment either through your local health center or the specialist’s office.
- Emergency Care: For emergencies, you can go directly to the nearest hospital with an emergency department (A&E). Present your SNS Number to receive immediate care.
Receiving Care:
- At the Health Center: When you arrive for your appointment, present your SNS Number at the reception. The staff will check your details and direct you to your doctor.
- At the Hospital: For any hospital visits, whether for emergency care or scheduled procedures, your SNS Number ensures that your medical records are accessible to the healthcare providers, facilitating better and quicker treatment.
